Art photography by Kirstine Mengel
Kirstine Mengel is an award-winning photographer whose works have been exhibited abroad and in Denmark. Mengel's art photographs often revolve, in different ways, around the special light, where something is condensed and the image is experienced as evocative. For several decades, she has taken one of her smallest cameras out in the early mornings when the fog has advanced. Or she has taken her usual, larger set-up out in the late night hours, when the full moon lights up the landscape. "For me, it's about capturing a very special moment," she explains as to why she is interested in the special light that fog and a full moon provide. It is about a fascination for the moment that cannot be recreated. Nature, as something at once recognisable, homely and eye-catching – perhaps thought-provoking – recurs in Mengel's photographs. Here the well-known is worth skimming over; the natural halted in a moment of dissolution. Exhibitions and international awards
Another motif that stands in strong contrast to the nature images is an abstract, almost graphically oriented way of depicting architecture in the Stairs of Wonder series. The series succeeded in being selected for exhibition at the Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2021. In addition, the series about Misty Mornings was exhibited at "Lys på Læsø" in 2019, in 2015 in Galleri 5000 in collaboration with the artist group Qwerty, in 2012 for photography day at Art Museum Brandts and at Marstal Søfarstmuseum in 2010 with the series "With salt water in the heart". Kirstine Mengel is a trained photographer and has worked photographing architecture, design, nature and people for more than 20 years. Kirstine Mengel has received a number of international awards for her work as a photographer, including the 'Prix de la Photographie Paris' and the 'International Photographer Award 2nd Prize in Architecture'.
